I've used Armoral on a few disgusting machines-mainly nicotine stains. Most vintage machine collectors simply use sewing machine oil for cleaning though, so we will have to agree to disagree on that point.

I "currently" have two crinkle machines. A Singer 66-18 and a Kenmore ???-812. I haven't cleaned either of them. Neither was particularly grungy like the smooth finished machines get. Both were quite dusty though. As I've handled and worked with them both machines have actually cleaned up.

As for the oil damaging or softening up the paint, I have to believe this was taken into consideration by the manufacturers due to the fact the machines have oil holes everywhere and over the years it's bound to get all over the paint. Neither of my crinkle machines show the any damage from oil around the oil holes. So, I'm not concerned with it.

I have this same machine. I used only sewing amchine oil to clean her. I did use cotton pads (for applying make-up) and rubbed it gently after the cleaning. And, I used a clean cotton cloth the get the extra oil off. I did that 2 months ago, and she is still black, not grey. I don't think the paint is any worse for wear. she came to me after it looked like she had been in a fire.

It could be I suppose, but on mind it is a reddish oily dust I am assuming from the wood case. That paint is tough not what you would have to do to get rust with it still in place.
