controlling speed
I love my Singer AP 676059 Touch & Sew Deluxe Zig Zag Model 628.....but I can't seem to find a 'sweet' spot when it comes to the presser foot/knee bar. Is there a trick to getting it to go only one speed? I seem to go 90 miles an hour no matter how lightly I press either the foot or the knee bar (have tried both ways to see which I could control).
I have a brother sewing machine that has a speed control on it and I have gotten spoiled with that!

Inspect the speed controller. Sometime the nichrome wires break or the finger contacts wear thin and don't engage properly. If that is the case, get a new, solid state type for your existing wires, if they are good. You can get a solid state controller from Sew-Classic.com. I am replace all the vintage controllers this way. You will never want to go back. Oh yes, some of the old ones get full or dirt from shoes over the years. While you have it open, dump it.
