Early 66 modified to stitch in reverse
I saw this on ebay. I wonder what what's involved in this hack.

That is a REVCO Reverse aftermarket kit. The outer mechanism is attached to a large aluminum screw that takes place of the original stitch length knob. Then the lever is connected to the inner parts of a the machine via linkage around the front and under the hand wheel.
The Reverser doesn't actually sew in reverse, what it does is make the machine capable of back tacking.
At least that's the way the one I have works.
One of our other members has a link to the original patent drawings for this unit. It's quite interesting. Perhaps he'll see this thread and post the link again.

I tried to find it on the US patent database using the terms sewing + machine + reverse, and also the name REVCO, but I couldn't find it. If you have the patent number on the document you saved I could look it up.

Thanks, Steve! If I had searched "machines" instead of "machine" I would have gotten several results:

Three of them are inventions similar to this one.

If you look up by serial number - I have a 1922 G 9,339,906 back clamp, and a 1923 G 0,100,316 side clamp. I have a manual with a revision date of 4/23 that shows the side clamp machine, so I know that one was not altered.
So far the latest manual I've see with the back clamp is 1920 (looking for one to match my machine) and the latest manual showing a Red Eye is 1929.
