wow, Sounds great. there is something satisfying about fixing something with a little time and no parts, and having something useful to show for it.

Thank you so much! I have a Supermatic waiting for some TLC, and I think I'll try this before replacing it totally. Not much to lose since I was sure I'd have to order a new one anyway. Plus, I wouldn't have thought about storing it with the handwheel off since I wouldn't use it all the time.

Minerva ( Minnesota ~B~ ) has a flat spotted drive wheel. I think I'll try that fix on her. Thanks for the tutorial.

What a great tute! I've learned from it. Now I need to know what kind of machines have these pulleys.

Janis, any vintage Elna with this body type has the pulley.

Is the pulley rubber or metal? Back in the 70's my jock husband had an exercise bike with a hard rubber front wheel. The tension was from a metal braking wheel that pressed on the tire. After a long hard ride he left the tension on and yup- melted a deep groove across the tire. Couldn't ride hard enough to melt it out so he used My Good Iron! It worked, and my iron was ruined with melted rubber. Not a good day in my house.

I got on Minerva last night. Thought I'd never get the flat spots out. Finally got all but one stubborn one. Kept at it. The motor on this machine is adjustable side to side and front to back to I've got lots of room to work with it.
Once finished it seems to run smoother at low speeds, but once past about half speed it acts like it's way out of balance.

I might check the drive wheel again to see if it perhaps out of round too.

The pulley is a hard rubber.

The only problem is - that rubber is as old as I am and sooner or later it is going to be toast.
