There are original pulleys in machines. People who have taken care of their machines and babied them have not had to replace the pulleys and they're as good as new. But, most people have stuck the machines up on a shelf, not used them for a bit and thus the problems. It's not really about the rubber or the integrity of the rubber, it's the constant pressure of the handwheel on one spot for too long that does the damage.
