The green ones have a tire on the inside that goes flat then the machine sounds like a truck trying to pass a motorcycle on a hill. I like the next one up. Elna SU or Star or what ever mine is grayish blue and white.

Or a "helicopter trying to take off" as one seller described his offer.

The big sister to the FW the Singer 301. This one is lighter and portable but full size. Then a big one the singer 201. It is not very portable but it is awesome. That green Elna is a gem. It runs nicer then any of my Singer 301s.

The Singer 404 is a good machine, too. It's bobbin isn't as annoying as the 301 or the FW. They are usually pretty cheap to buy. It is just a strip down version of the 401. Not too heavy either.

I like my electric 201K best, then the 99K and have a 15 K that sews really nicely, have converted it to a Treadle but still waiting on a couple of bolts for the cabinet frame near the treadle to arrive from USA. I used a treadle Singer when I married in 1966, it was a 201 machine. But I love all my old Singers, including the FW's! They don't make today's machines to last like the oldies!

I love my 401a, it's my go-to machine especially if I'm using denim or other heavy materials. I even got a back up one just to be safe. I also have a fondness for the little 3/4 machines like the 99 and the 185.
