That reminds me of a Funny/Sad experience I had in Singapore. I was there integrating our US shipping operation with the Singapore company we used for freight forwarding. I was given a tour of one of the worlds largest laptop manufacturers facilities and given the opportunity to sit and chat with their engineers.
They were in the process of bringing a new laptop to the market and let me play with the manufacturing and design prototypes. It was the most amazing laptop I have ever used. It was solid, quiet, quick, and the keyboard was the best I have ever used. This machine had just finished evaluations that showed it would have an expected operating life of more than 20 years! I told them that "I" wanted one of these! They laughed and said the production model was not going to be like that. Their specific job was to de-engineer it until that number was 36 months. Their studies have shown that the original purchaser only owns the machine for an average of 24 months before upgrading. They felt that any lifespan longer than that was unnecessary expense and ate into their profit margin.
THAT is why we collect older machines and why modern copies that LOOK right are not even in the same league with the originals.
