A friend of mine had been given a 221-1 Singer Featherweight by the son of a woman who had passed. She used it for about a year and then needed some money. She offered it to me for $100, so I bought it. It is exactly like the one my grandmother had and I had used many years ago. It is in great shape and I am so thrilled to own it. I looked up the serial number and I believe it was made in about 1937. It would not sew when I tried it out, but after adjusting every thing it sews beautifully. Woo Hoo!

Cari, how do you know it is newer than a 1952 model? I have to check the serial numbers out to see what year a FW is, do you see something in the photo that lets you know this? Just curious. From the picture it looks like it is in very good condition. I love my FWS.[/QUOTE]
It has the striated face plate, which was the standard change for Singer machines(and most Japanese clones) in the early 1950s. There are always exceptions though, so it could be a little earlier but odds are it's not.
