I hope I may mention it here but there is a good book about sewing machines and how they work and something about the history:

"The Sewing Machine Master Guide" by Clifford L. Blodget!

I got it for my kindle for free some time ago!
It's really good for someone interested in new and old sewing machines!

Thank you for showing us this interesting machine! The bakelite casing is very nice! Please keep us updated with your progress in finding a bobbin and possibly getting it working.

Found the history on misspellsalot http://www.sewalot.com/ward_arm_and_platform.htm

Patented in 1873, it is domestic, lock stitch and uses a shuttle.
