SteveH, can you explain a little about the needle direction/height? I am not sure what you are referring to. I thought the needles could only be inserted in a certain way? I am such a newbie to all of this.

    Thank you in advance

Most needles have a long groove and a short groove. The long groove needs to face away from the shuttle/hook.

Height is that assuming you have an original needle and that this brand was made so that the needle goes all the way into the needlebar and stops at the right height, then you are fine and have nothing to do, otherwise you would need to follow the manual for setting the needle height correctly.

The flat side of the needle should face the right, not the back, like with newer machines. A standard singer needle is the right size. I've threaded the shuttle correctly and the needle can pick up the bobbin thread. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but if I ever figure it out, I'll post my solution
