Ammonia goes a long way when it comes to cutting smoke smell. The ammonia smell disappears and you are left with the natural smell of the material you are working with.

I use a product called Guardsman on my furniture. If you can find it that might work.

There is a cleaner which is a prep before painting. It is a liquid you mix with water; it is turquoise colored. It is sold at Home Depot. I wish I could tell you the name but it is great! If you have to paint there is this paint from England called chalk paint. Not chalk board paint but chalk paint. It is a little expensive but so easy to use. No prep work and leaves a wonderful shabby chic finish. Good luck!

I used to do refinishing. That furniture may be wood but if it is the kind made in the fifties that it looks like you may get a surprise if you accidentally stripped it with a solution. That wood is "PLYWOOD" and does not redo easily if you try to stain it. That is why the furniture is heavy lasts a long time and holds together so well but many companies did the off white -yellow color with a lacquer finish. Many of the beds had the bookcase headboards.
