Cleaning off old 3-in-one oil off is not fun, it takes forever!!!! RESIST THE URGE TO USE IT!(sorry for shouting). Please use new sewing machine oil and you'll have years of trouble free sewing.

Whale oil and 3 in 1 are the hardest oils on sewing machines, and they used to use whale oil exclusively in the sew repair shops.
