Default Help! Singer red eye won't form a stitch

Cleaned her all up. Sure wish decals were available somewhere. Next step was going to be using Glen's wonderful tute to redo the top coat, but decided to just stop and check the stitch. The machine has not been used in at least 30 years. A sane person might wonder why it has been moved at least four times, but...

Downloaded the manual. Put in a new needle. Used a bobbin from the drawer that was already wound, because the automatic bobbin winder needs a new tire. The foot pedal works and the machine moves the needle fine with a slight noise. Readjusted the bobbin case; it moves slightly when the needle moves up and down. Threaded the machine carefully. No luck bringing up the bobbin thread. Checked that the flat of the needle faces right. Still no luck. Took off the bobbin plate cover to see what happens. No loop goes across when machine is engaged, and it looks as if the hook isn't close enough to the needle position to catch the thread.

Timing problem? I didn't take anything apart on the underside, just cleaned what I could get at. The feed dogs won't come out. Think it is a 66-1 because it has the back clamping feet. Any ideas?

Pictures of the hook and needle would be helpful. You want to try all other possible options before messing with the timing.

    Hi,

Replace needle, check upper tension, turn machine over by hand towards you and watch what happens. If you don't already have an owners manual, you can get one from ismacs. Keep both plates off so you can get a good view of the goings on and clean under the needle plate. Like Candace says, timing is very rarely the problem on the 66 and it's usually something basic or operator error.
    Good Luck

Make sure you have the correct needle and that it goes down far enough.

Are you using a Singer brand 15x1 needle? There are differences in the length of needles between different brands.

Thanks to all of you. Likely it is the needle. Will try to find one in town tomorrow. Or get it off the net. As soon as she completes that pretty stitch, it will be time to decide whether to look for the missing parts for the treadle or just leave her as an electric (the motor is not original). I did down load the manual and read it. There are a set of back clamping feet and a set of side clamping feet that obviously belonged to another machine; We did have another treadle machine when I was young.

Jlhmnj has the right idea. It is probably the needle. If the hook looks correct, then try that. Timing can be a can of worms and don't go there if you don't have to. Sometimes hooks can become broken. Just keep after it and you will prevail. I have a repairman's guide I bought on the internet that goes farther than the adjustors guide.
