    Thanks for all your comments. I'm wondering what type of varnish or shellac is on the grasscloth to seal it. I had grasscloth wallpaper in my 1st apartment in the mid 70's- and beaded curtains- and an optic fiber color changing lamp- and very long hair. What memories!

    I bet other than the original color, that in time the GLUE they used to adhere it to the case foundation is what is showing through now...that and if the owner smoked...OY...it will be stained even if it does not smell!

    I think the cloth could be "sealed" with polyeurethane.

    If you have a Chem-Dry carpet cleaner any where around--they have a spot cleaner that is baking soda based---also would give you advice on how to clean your Grass-top 301 very helpful with everything I have ever called them about
