I have had many featherweight motors apart, including pulling the grease cups and wicks out. I can tell you that on a good percentage of these motors the felt wicks are hard as a rock from dried up old grease and I don't think any new grease applied ever makes it to the armature shaft & bushing.
This is probably the reason that some unknowing sewing machine shops say to use oil. I take the wicks and let them soak in lacquer thinner, then blow them out with compressed air. I repeat this a few times and the grease wicks become clean & soft. I then (saturate) the wick with grease before I install them. Fill the grease cup with Singer motor grease and your good for MANY hours of sewing.
On our restored machines we use new wicks.

It's so nice to know that if I have a question, all I have to do is ask. You all know the answers. Thanks.
