I have succumbed to the charms

Um, exactly how does one give a machine a "dunking" or oil "bath"? And what kind of oil? I was wondering about this on another thread where this treatment was recommended as a step in restoring older treadle heads.

Oh! don't be intimated or afraid of this "little doll". You simply must put her to work. You will love sewing on this new acquistition.FW's are so much fun to sew on. We have 12 ladies in our quilt group - we meet once a month - we meet tomorrow, and four of us have Fw's. Others have watched us sew on ours and have about decided they must have one also. I love mine, I have 2. I can only sew on one at a time, but after purchasing the first one, when the second came up at a garage sale, I reaced over and grabbed it quick, before anyone else could beat me to it. I truly enjoy my Bernina 930 and love to sew on it, but there's just something about the Fw's. I switch out. I have made three tops on my FW and quilted one tope on it.
So pulg that sweetheart in and get after a quilt top or something. You will absolutely love it.

Thanks for all the encouragement, Joe. I love your posts and learning about what you do to refurbish these old ladies. I was hoping that when my husband retired, he would be willing to tackle some of the cleaning and maintenance issues since this will not be my only new/old beauty!
I have downloaded the manual, and the machine came with the Nancy Johnson-Srebro book, so I think I have enough instruction in front of me. I think what intimidates me the most is the oiling that has to be done so often. I'm afraid I'll screw up with that and the lubing. I said I'm not mechanically inclined!

Leslie! Even though you have those two books, I hightly recommend going to FW 221 site orat one time I think it was Dave's Desk, you can get there on line with FW221 and purchase his book "The Featherweight 221 and I" this is a great book for ilustrating the maintenance and care of these dolls, and walks you through step by step. I had the other books also fut found this site and purchased the book, and I can follow along with it over the manual. He sends out a newsletter about once a year, and has very interesting and often needed articles, about the FW. I don't think you will regret purchasing that book. I think they need to be oiled often, because of the size of their motor and they work so hard, but all machines are just like your automobile, you drive them for so long and then have an oil change or other routine maintenance. Enjoy your new friend!

I knew that Desk Dave refurbished and repainted featherweights, but I didn't know about his book. I will look into it.
I love this board!
