I love my 201-2 and find it sews very well. Mine is a 1937. You were lucky to get one of the later ones. This machine was, at one time, Singer's highest priced machine. It was very expensive to produce too. It is a good enough machine to pass down to at least one or MORE generations. They are top notch. Parts are still available at Sew-Classic.com at reasonable prices with quick service. I ordered a new cord and bobbin winder tires, along with oil and grease from them. They still have attachments too. Later, we ordered a walking foot for it. You are lucky indeed to have found one for $15. Oh, by the way, you have a great friend to have found the machine and called you. Scouts are wonderful indeed.

You are right Joe. You give such good advice. I punched the manual printout, tabbed it and placed it in a 3-ring notebook. It is fairly handy and easy to read. Not a thing of beauty, by any means, but it gets the job done. Home printer copies are probably more expensive in ink than one already printed. I was in a hurry, so made my own. You don't have to have a manual, but it makes life sooooo much easier. May the force be with you.

$15 was a steal! You'll love sewing with her. Make sure that you oil everywhere the manual shows and your machine will hardly make any noise at all.
I have a 201k-4, original hand crank, circa 1936. She runs on treadle power except when the kids want to sew quilt blocks. I paid $75 for mine, it came in a bentwood case. Its my favorite treadle machine, its incredibly quiet and sews beautifully.
