I have three....and obviously need more! When I picked up the last one, a Singer 185, my boyfriend asked me if I wanted to "collect" why didn't I buy thimbles! I laughed so hard...and he got the point. He can buy as much wood and wood working tools as he wants...but leave my fabric and sewing machines alone.

I have somewhere around 21-23 machines. They all work. Two are treadles c. 1900.

Where do you find them? I only have a SA and GW, no thrift stores. Seldom do yard sales have sewing machines.

Estate sales would be a good source.

well. thrift stores are great... I work in a repair garage and the garbagemen will once in a while score a machine and bring it to me.... lol.... its funny, they will call me ahead of time and tell me they are bringing me a prize...

I use a similar diversion; someone asks how many sewing machines I have I say "less than the number of firearms my husband owns" LOL

One of the treadles was purchased from a guy at work. Most of my machines were from garage/yard sales, although I have seen machines at thrift stores. Some machines were bought on eBay. Craigslist is also a possible source. My quilting machine I bought from a fellow Quilting Board member. There is even a yahoo group for selling/buying sewing related items.

Me too! It's not so bad. When I think I am going to let one go... I can't decide.
