The song you're singing sounds very familiar. About a year ago I decided I wanted to work with some folks who are less fortunate by teaching them to sew -- specifically to quilt. Of course few have machines so I started collecting. I had two machines but didn't want to haul them around so I started searching. The first three went to the shop for cleaning and repairs -- decided that was just too costly, so I've hit the garage sales, dug out manuals, screw drivers, and the oil can. Now have 16. One is a Singer Red-eye that is in really bad shape, but I couldn't leave it sitting in the trash. There's an old treadle by Singer made from Wheller and Wilson parts when they bought out that company around 1910 -- it's a honey and was my first attempt at doing it myself but needs an odd sized needle. Four can't be really classified as vintage, but they're portable and cost $35 plus a belt, a shuttle assembly and a few feet. I think my "fleet" is about ready to begin it's journey. But, I am tired of fixing machines much less learning how! My computer has so many manuals and schematics on it I'll have to clean it before I can put any more patterns on there! I'm ready to sew. Sorry flowers, dust bunnies. . . your turn will come. Later.

My rule to keep sewing is that any machine I bring into the house has to be fixed, and to prove its worthiness as a sewing machine, has to complete a project. That way, the projects at least get thinned down as sewing machines find their way home with me. I am going to use the Kenmore 158.xxx to make a shirt quilt for one of my daughter's friends that graduated with her. Then I can hunt another machine.

Melinda,
That is an excellent rule, unfortunately the machines came faster than projects. I have just now come up with a suitable project to keep me busy and that is my quilt, but that doesn't even work because here I sit working on a new machine that just came into the house................GROAN!!

Me too! I've thinned my collection down to 8...of which 4 have a lot of sentimental value. They all work perfectly & have nice cabinets. I'd never sew if I keep buying, fixing, refinishing, etc!!!
