Instructions for Packaging an old machine for shipment
#31
I have way more "success" stories for shipping machines than "sob" ones. If it changed I'd probaby stop buying on eBay.
It helps that most of what I buy is a very basic machine, no lights or electrical - so very little to get broke.
However machines shipped are more prone to damage. Sellers sometimes think the case acts as a shipping carton - NOT! BTW - the case gets damaged way more often than the machine.

I do have to reply to this thread as I purchased a machine from Steve. Even tho I am using it for decorative purposes, he had that machine so well packed that I think an elephant could have sat on it and it would have survived. BTW, Steve I saved that padding so if I ever need to pack anything, I have the stuff to do it with. Thanks much. Amy

Neat Find! I doubt very many of those boxes are still around.
Miriam, I doubt they let the machine bounce around loose inside. It would either have been packed in something like straw or excelsior, secured to the case, or maybe both. The box itself is sturdy enough to prevent other things outside from damaging the machine but there's still the issue of having the machine destroy itself.
I read that Singer made their early packing crates in a way where they could double as the treadle base when the machine arrived at it's destination.
