Introducing myself
Hi, My name is Cathy, and I'm a vintage sewing machine addict. . .
And I like to quilt too.
I found out about this board from J Miller, and showed it to my husband and HE got addicted. It wasn't long before my husband was saying things like "SteveH said" or "If Joe thinks" or "Mirriam recomends" along with referring to many others by name . And then he developed a desire for an old Bernina, and then a Pfaff and most recently a Singer 201 of his own. He already had four green vikings, a 6570, Singers in 403A, 237 and 534. I'm having to take a hard line with him -or he'll fill up the house with old machines!
Which would be fine but I'm having a hard enough time fitting my machines in the house!
My husband is my sewing machine mechanic - and he's getting very good at it. Though he's been spending more time fixing up his instead of mine . . .
I had bought an old Singer in a treadle cabinet for $25 at a neighbor's moving auction many years ago. Had it in the house and forgot about it. Then I started tanning rabbit hides and asked if that machine would work to sew them. But then I needed to get it working, I discovered the machine I had was a very rusty 66 back clamp Red-eye, and decided I should upgrade to a nicer looking machine . . . and starting looking around and developed a desire to find a Singer 201 like I learned to sew on (my niece ended up with the machine). I found a 66 in a cabinet like I remembered the 201 being in, so I bought that (then discovered it was the wrong cabinet. . . ) Then I saw a Parlor cabinet, and fell in love with that . . .
I did not start out meaning this to happen, but my Singer collection of machines, cabinets and cases is up to 21 machines. I'll let my husband mess with the Non-Singers. Then I started putting together sets of attachments and manuals for each machine. Though I think I might have gone overboard at some point in this all . . . we've fallen into some amazing deals in our search too.
I do most of my sewing on my 30 year old Viking 990. And I do have one brand new machine - my Bailey 15" on a Gracie frame.
My husband and I are mid 50's, post kids and it's looking like we may never be grandparents. So we fill up our time playing with old sewing machines.

Spoken like a true addict. I just bought 3 large boxes of feet on ebay, probably 100 pieces, just to get one foot and a key that I *think* will fit my bentwood case. It was a good deal, though. And the other feet might come in handy some day...ya never know.
It's wonderful that your husband is into sewing machines! Mine tolerates my obsession, and I'm grateful for that.
I'm new here too, Cathy. It's a great board!
