All NVF's like in Jims's picture use a 15x1 needle. The VF2, VF1, and LAVF, the previous Vertical Feed models, use the "Davis Long" needle, the most common form being the Boye 10. Around 1873 (Pre Davis Improved) and earlier a round shank needle was used which is slighty shorter than the Davis Long. I've only seen less than a handful of machines that would have been made to use this round shank needle, most common form being the "Boye 20".

The Ismacs Needle list does show a "Davis NVF" as using a 15x1, though it is a very long list.

You'll notice the disc tension on your new machine is different than your later NVF, the later tension system being patented January 1915. I'd stick with SM oil for delicate decals like your Davis. If I'm impatient and not concerned about possible decal loss I use non pumiced Gojo.

Jon, I can't reach my camera or either machine ATM, but what I'm saying is that the one above has an "L" shaped leaf spring by the presser foot levers, held on by 2 screws that passes around the presser foot, and pushes against the needle bar, sort of. I have not removed the cover yet, but I'm wondering if that was replaced by an internal coil spring on the later one.
I've played with an awful lot of cleaning regimens, but I guess I thought that soap and water wouldn't attack the finish.
I'm looking forwards to locating the treadle parts, that were removed when the head was electrified.

This leaf spring pushes the feedbar and needlebar towards the operator and a roller inside the head pushes it away to give the machine its front / back feed motion.

The NVF is the last model of Davis Vertical Feed so it was never improved upon except by other companies such as Singer.

This is one thing I'm not willing to go take a picture of! Afraid everything would fall out and then DH would be mad at me because he'd be stuck getting it all back together!

    Jim,

When you get a chance, take a picture I'm very interested in seeing this. This is the only internal "layout" I'm familiar with

    Thanks

    Hi Cathy,

If the feed is not cleaned well oftentimes the rollers will not roll and get flat spots with additional use. Not an easy job though not tough if well prepared. I have read stuff that makes it seem much more difficult than it really is.

The bend in the external leaf spring can be seen somewhat in the middle of the photo at the very bottom and it rests on the back of the feed bar which is not shown. Never seen or heard tell before of the other.
