'Stitch maker' is good I've never used it, but I might.... I usually call myself a dressmaker because calling myself a 'couturier' makes me feel uncomfortable; and technically I'm not entitled (by the strict French rules around the use of the term)... Having said that, every other person in Australia who does what I do would call themselves a Couturier. I like that 'Stitch Maker' would also encompass crocheting, which I'm also passionate about
Men here are usually called 'Tailors' and I'm not sure why women aren't also called Tailors considering it's all the same thing - but I think it carries connotations of menswear, rather than the maker being male. Very interesting question!
