Steve, 4339 was made in 1867 and is the first free arm machine ever recorded, I believe. Featured in ISMACS magazine a few months ago. Apparently this isn't the machine photographed either, so there are at least two in the world.

Sorta.... The Patchers (politype, claes, etc) might be more able to claim the first free arm. But this is definitely the earliest convertible I know of. It may be the first domestic free arm.
It is a Ward's "Arm and Platform". Yep, lots were made. Few survive. I have seen at least three on the big auction site in the last few years. Someday.

Yes, a great big Thank You to you both! I'll probably never get to go outside the U.S. to visit anywhere, but I'd love to visit Australia and see the sights there, and I'd make it a priority to make it to see your wonderful displays. I love the older machines! AND a big Thank You to Mike for sharing those wonderful photos with us!

Judi and Wayne's story is true of most SM enthusiasts. I'm convinced we are all interested in sharing and helping others. We love both, people and machines. Just a bunch of softies. Thanks for sharing their story. And, welcome, Judi&Wayne. We are looking forward to your input.
