Meet Fiona my Slant O Matic
#11
my husband loves the 400 series machines. He's got a 403 and I've got a 401, though his "the one" machine has turned out to be his 201. I'm finding he gets attached to the machines he works on, and when we traded two of them this last week, he was like a guy sending his child off to school - giving the new owners all kinds of pointers and showing them this and that and all about fixing them up. On a good note, the new owners seemed very pleased to meet the person that fixed them up.

Here is Poor Tobacco
On the other hand here is Tobacco. She was solid brown when I pulled her off the trash heap. The crack, crevices are the most intense for me in cleaning machines because I clean every microscopic bit of it so she will be saved for cleaning last. So far there doesn't seem to be rust. So hopefully I can have her looking like Fiona someday. I know I have seen much worse here cleaned up so I am very hopeful.

Somebody oiled every day. It will clean up just fine and probably be the best machine you own... All that oil should keep everything in good shape. It will take some time and elbow grease. I had one like that - covered in oil, tobacco, doggie do and leaves - got it out of the neighbor's trash. Great machine. Idiots for neighbors - in more ways than one...

Fiona's twin sister, Alvie, lives at my house. You will love sewing with Fiona. Wonderful stitches, rock solid, easy to care for, and goes on forever. And as far as I can tell will sew anything.
Mine belonged to my grandmother who was a garment sewer. Take a look at the plate covering the bobbin; the 5/8 inch mark. Even though Alvie lives in a cabinet, the bottom of that mark is just about worn off from fabric passing over it. These machines are not just pretty faces.
I hope you do enjoy her. Fiona looks beautiful.
