Oh my gosh what great news! I love the 401's and th 301 too! You both got really lucky! *Also finding that featherweight in the basement is a great one too! So many happy things all in one post! These are probably my favorite 3 machines! Throw in a Necchi and a Bernina and what more could you ask for?
The 401 can get stiff and gummed up in the workings under the hood. Don't be discouraged if it needs some cleaning and cleaning and re-cleaning because they are worth the effort!
The 401 serial number is underneath just like the 500 series and the Singer 301 website has info on when they were produced. That site is really cool and has a lot of very interesting information especially on the 301 but it speak to owners of 301, 401, and 500's.
