Sew-Classic has them too.
The drip pan covers that and you never touch it, so it's no problem. Lead dust or lead oxide is harmful if inhaled or ingested. But you have to touch it and then ingest it, or disturb it so it becomes airborne then breathe it. Just put the bottom cover back on and it won't be a problem.

Lead Dust?
I have seen newer machines with the same powdery coating. We thought it was mold. My 301 as covered with it. I cleaned it of with Windex If you want to be cautious, then Use a plastic sandwich bag over your hand then turn it inside out and discard it in the trash. No dust and no debris. You made a wonderful find. Good job. Donna

The white stuff on the 301 was most likely mold. Lead oxide does not form on anything but lead. I have seen mold on rubber insulation, metal surfaces, plastic and especially the wooden machine cases.

My Featherweight case had a very strong odor when I got it, although other than that it is in great shape. I tried several things including sunning it. Finally I placed several pieces of charcoal in a mesh bag and I think wadded up newspaper all inside and closed it up. Left that for several days and the smell was mainly gone.
You got a very good deal on your machine, I know I paid a premium price for mine. I hope you enjoy it!
