My new toy! (A 401A)

That machine looks a lot like my mom's, the one I learned on as a young girl and sewed on for many years. I did not get my own until I went away to school. I think hers had some cams for the fancy stitches and was maybe a little newer.

You can get the replacement rubber tire and knob on ebay. People can and do part out these machines that are too far gone for saving(or because they can get more to part them out than to sell them:<) But, if you're patient you can probably find your knob. The knob tightens, so your stitch is "locked" in. Not absolutely necessary, but a good thing to have so you don't accidently move it while sewing or the vibration of the machine may move it and change the length on you.
Great find!

I have a 401A bought new in 1958. This is the last year Singer used all metal parts. This machine is a tank! It will sew anything: awnings, bedspreads, and will do almost anything the embroidery machines of today will do--you just have to be the person setting the controls and guiding it. I love mine and would ever get rid of it. I do have a featherweight and a Viking 1200 but I use the 401 the most.

I too have one of these machines. I found mine in a GoodWill store for $12.50. Attachments included and some cams also. Mine is a portable with a let down flap like the feather weights. It is in excellent condition. My MIL had one that she sewed on, but it was in a cabinet. Mine is sort of heavy, but will enjoy using it.
