It doesn't say in the manual but I assume that the thread feeds thru it to put some tension on the thread while it is winding. I am assuming that you are referring to that long narrow piece of metal that is just by the bobbin winder.

Oh wow...that`s another one....you lucky girl....my hubby won`t let me buy anymore vintage machines....he say if i want a machine buy a new one...lol he just doesn`t get it....but i do have a very small house that is already too full so maybe he is right...lol wow...Cochrane...really? that`s awesome....yes....changed my avatar....i like seeing what other people look like so figured i should show myself...lol

Just paid a little more attention to the cabinet & it was also made by New Williams or at least for New Williams as it is on the foot treadle of the cabinet, in big letters "New Williams" so I assume this is NOT a Singer cabinet.
