memare - "New Ideal" is only a badge name - no sewing manufacturing company. Your machine was made by New Home. Who knows who contracted with New Home to put that name on them, but New Home, National and Davis put lots and lots of "badged" names on their machines. Other companies did it too, but to a lesser extent.

Singer is the exception- they did not put other names on their machines in the early years.

hehe - I went out to the shed to take some pictures, and kept thinking the cabinet didn't seem like a New Home, but it was the only one like it I had - and then I realized I was taking pictures of the cabinet I just brought home that the National Two Spool goes in - opps!

So I found the New Home and got these pictures.

Had a few helpers too



The cable attaches to the back of the top flap. The weight of the flap holds the machine up when it's opened.



Goes through a pully at the back of the top



And attaches to a bar hooked to the lower part of the front skirt.



Sorry the one is blurry - I didn't realize the camera focused on the wrong part until after I got back in the house.

This is a picture of the cabinet I took when I was organizing a few weeks ago.



if yours is not like this, please take a picture and I'll see if I can match one up. I've got several different cabinets that open like this, and sometimes a different company made the cabinets so different brands of machines can be found in them.

Thats some herd of cats--look like good mousers. Not sure if Wheeler and Wilson would be considered a Singer badge or not. 1908 catalog from Needlebar:

PS---I have what I believe to be a treadle cable measuring 21-1/2" long with press fit eyelets on each end. Got in a box of junk and yours if you think it will work.

Singer bought WW, and was either providing ongoing support - or cleaning out inventory. They sure didn't make the Singer W9 for all that long.

The same thing happened when Free took over New Home, it took a while before "New Home" was only a name on a Free machine.

Sort of like Remington taking over Marlin, took them a while to use up old stock and start producing Marlins with the quality control standards of Remington.

Thank you for the photos Cathy. Mine is similar in function but it used a leather strap instead of a cable.
i pieced together the old dry rotted one and wrote down the following dimensions.

I can get some photos of those sections of my cabinet, but it may be a few days as I've had bronchitis this past week. And hubby says I'm to rest...

Thanks for the kind offer Jon, but I think 21.5" would be too short.

This photo is where one end of the strap is attached to the lid.
I'm pretty sure the screws aren't original... My grandfather had 'fixed' this a time or two and the points have pierced the other side of the lid.

The strap will be flat, this definitely has a twist to it.

I still can't fathom how a leather strap can hold up the weight of that machine...
I keep thinking there needs to be a locking lever or some such thing once it's in the upright position...
