My friend gave this to me. What is it, other than New National brand?

I believe that is a New Home machine. "new National" is just the name on it, not the model or mfg.

just checked needle bar. New Home model "U". National is the name of a mfg, but the did not make this machine.

Yep, it is a New Home made "New National". I had one of these. (Traded it to a fellow member) They were made during the second wave of "cost reductions" of sewing machines. They are well made by today's standards, but were considered the low end at the time they were made. The cast iron base they we all love so much is actually the lowest cost option of the day.
With that said, once cleaned and oiled they sew very well. They are not made to the standards that say a W&W #9 would have been, but they were also 1/4 the price.
