Default NewTo Me Singer 416 New Gear Won't Pick Up Bobin Thread

Found the 416 at a charity fleamarket with a broken plastic gear that drives the thread pick up around the bobin. Replaced the gear according to Andy's video, timed the pick up with the hook just hidden behind a full stroke needle. Still won't grab the bobin thread. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the Board! Try a new needle, even if you already have a new needle in. Make sure the needle is inserted correctly as to which side the flat of the shank should be: left, right, front, back.

Also, with no thread and the bobbin removed, cycle the machine by hand and see how close the hook is to the needle. If the hook is too far away then it won't grab the loop in the thread created on the needle's upstroke. It's possible this gap changed with replacing the gear.

Good to know, never thought of that. Needle goes flat side to the back I believe and I have new ones to try. Will post results.

Finally got it to pick up the bobin thread but needs a bit of tension adjustment yet. Sort of on the right track it seems

The bobin case is getting out of alignment and then binding so need to check the spring placement
