There is a product I have come across called "Awesome", and it is truly awesome. It is inexpensive and I find it locally at the Family Dollar store and the Dollar Tree. I use it on everything, grease on my husband's work clothes, grass stains, carpet stains, walls, floors, car, etc.

In a well ventilitated room I used amonia on a cotton ball to clean a sewing machine. Did it ever work! No elbow greese needed and no harm to the finish, just wipe it off right away as amonia can be used as a paint stripper too.

Not sure I would risk ammonia anywhere near one of my machines! That stuff is ROUGH!! Some of the finishes on these vintage machines are kind of or very fragile. I'd be nervous.
