I know I'm late to this party
Here's the magic trick I learned, and I use it on almost everything:
Dry Erase marker. The solvent (which I suspect is alcohol based) in the dry erase removes permanent marker. I've used it on textured laptop lids and everything.
Magic erasers are very abrasive as mentioned and can ruin finishes. I found out with a teak table that also had permanent marker on it.
Alcohol is OK on the machines like the one you have here, but one of the old shellacked machines would be ruined, so do be careful if you find an older machine with marker on it.

Tammi - Are Rocketeers shellacked? Mine is so grubby and yucky looking. Figured I'd use warm water, with a dab of dish soap, and a splash of vinegar on a rag. Alcohol seemed like a good idea, right up until I read to the end! ;0))

For the really grubby 301 / 401 /403 / Rocketeers etc - I use OxyClean and Dawn - http://www.archaicarcane.com/the-dif...e-a-day-makes/

Lara,
The tans and mocha colored paints used by Singer during the Rocketeer's time had a tendency to 'bloom' (go splotchy) when water got on it. I clean mine with sewing machine or baby oil.

I've never seen this before, do you have a picture, in case I have just been missing it?
