Hello all. I've just picked up a Pfaff 1214 at an estate sale. It sews just fine, but there is an issue with the pattern selection knob. There are 3 components to the knob. The center selects the needle position. The next ring out is supposed to stay stationary, which is part of my problem. Then the outer ring turns (stiffly on this one) to choose the stitch length/width.

My issue is the outer ring and center ring spin sort of together. I suspect something has come loose inside, but I cannot figure out how to remove the knob to get in there and look. Is there any sort of trick short of removing all of the bits from the top down?

I would check with a sewing machine repair who works with older machines and see if they will give you an answer. Some can be very helpful. There are even a few who can still get parts for those machines as the factory threw away all their parts when they sold out to Singer.

I don't know them that well, but I think the inner knob comes off by just pulling it. You can take the top and bottom of this model to inspect and lubricate parts. Maybe it's easier to inspect when the inner knob is off, and maybe something can be detected from under the lid on top.

Thanks shasta and Mickey. I tried pulling the knobs straight out before posting and they didn't budge. I was worried I would Hulk them right off the machine if I pulled too hard and end up breaking it worse. I will be taking this in to the local Pfaff dealer to see what it would take to save it if it can be saved.

They can almost always be saved if they are worth it. I lean towards something like a 332 when I invest time and money in a machine. The 1214 has stretchy stitches and it's very nice to have a machine capable of them, so I understand you want it up and running.

Well, the machine was dropped off for repair today. They have a 2 week backlog They quoted between $70-100 for the repair and suspect it's just gummed up.
