Thanks for all the great suggestions.. I decided to just strip that side of the pan and repaint it..since it will be covered with new pad anyway. I used Citristrip, painted it on with a small paintbrush. As I was applying it the old glue started loosening immediately..it didn't bubble up, rather it looked "gelly-ish", a lot like the consistency of really gooey rubber cement (which maybe that's what was used originally in 1952, as I am no expert by any means, I wouldn't know). By the time I had it all covered it was ready to remove. I took paper towels and just wiped it off. To finish I used some lukewarm water and mild dish soap along with a non-scratch scrubber. I was surprised at how easy it all went. Dh took it to his workshop and repainted it for me. Thankfully the bottom side looks great, I tried to be extra careful.
Thanks again,
K
