Iris threaded this one up today. She had to turn the tension knob one number to get it right.. YAY for easy fixes.

When piecing with a hand crank is there a trick? I always use both hands.

No trick, just use a seam guide and guide with the left. Crank slow until you get the hang of it. If the presser foot is adjusted correctly the fabric will track straight. Not as hard as you might think.
