Gears are all metal cam stack is plastic. I've seen a lot of stuck knobs and buttons the push in reverse are the worst. I should sneak back in there and lay it on its side over night.

The back. The dial looking thing houses the cam stack - it is held on by a screw.
What I love is that thread holder. It can turn upside down to store in the case!

Miriam, that is a beautiful machine, and obviously very complicated. Fantastic cleaning job on both machine and case. I hope you get it moving soon!

Well, the stitch selector knob now turns freely. As usual there was nothing wrong with the knob itself. If you look at the picture of the internal parts you will see lots of complicated stuff. That stuff was all gummed up. Once it was all ungummed it is fine. The reverse button moves freely but the machine only goes in reverse. More ungumming to do.

I've been armed with a flashlight, tri-flow and kroil. The reverse button is not the culprit. The dried up oil is somewhere in the parts that move the feed dogs forward or not. Seems like the stitch length is set at 0 and no turning that knob affects what ever rides on it. The reverse button move freely - but only if you pull it out. The machine seems to have been parked for a few decades with the dial set for button hole. The button hole setting pulls the reverse button all the way out and does not allow you to push it in even if you want to. The part that returns the button is stuck. Somewhere. In other words it isn't a stuck knob - it is a stuck thingy that I haven't gotten oil to flow into yet. The rest of that machine moves like a dream. I am oiling it every day whether it needs it or not. There is no reason to take it apart.

I don't think Kroil has anything on TriFlow, maybe the price tag. I am convinced they need a drop once or twice a day when they are stuck like that. I keep up a daily oiling and running the machine routine for a week after it has loosened up, since it takes a bit of effort and repeated oiling to flush out the old grime and replace it with new clean oil. Sometimes running it on full speed has loosened up sticky parts enough for oil to seep in there. I'm just thinking out loud really, I'm sure you are all onto it.

Kroil and TriFlow are VERY different products. Kroil is a penetrating fluid, TriFlow is a lubricant. The traditional solution (recommended by the manufacturers) was kerosene as a de-gunking agent, and oil for lubrication. Still works better than anything I have found

Well, so far I'm not impressed with either one as far as instant results on the button innards problem. I did alternate t-f and k on the stitch selector mechanism so I have no idea which is better.
