Wow, now I can speak up when this discussion comes up within local conversation. Love what I learn on here, now if I can just retain it. Thanks for all the comments, especially to you SteveH. Your posts sometimes amaze me.

Interesting, amazing, and to think we're learning about this on a quilt forum!

I think we should be able to produce cams now. maybe soon we will be able to reproduce the camstacks for some of those that are so prone to cracking.

On Election Day a neighbor said his company was getting a 3d printer. I was just thinking about replacement parts for some old machines. Shuttles for long bobbins.

That would be very nice...

I think the hard part will be getting people to sit down and design the camstacks into a format the 3D printers can use. That too will get easier. I have this idea that if we already have 3D printers, 3D scanners aren't far behind.

There was some talk of 3d scanners when I was reading about the printers. They're in a sort of preliminary stage at the moment, but they're there.

How's this for a heart warming story about 3d printers? http://techcrunch.com/2014/12/16/dog...o-3d-printing/ - ETA: Warning! Grab a tissue first! ;)

Or,.. build your own for $60 ;) http://www.instructables.com/id/eWas...nter/?ALLSTEPS - The geek in me SOOO wants to do this. I probably have enough of those drives around here to make a whole herd of them.
