The opening poster is referring to Singer 221 aka Featherweight which has a 'sealed' bottom (bed cover plate) that has a felt liner. IIRC the Featherweight is the only machine that came with a felt liner.

Evidently, I didn't recall correctly. I didn't remember my 301s having a felt, but according to the parts list they do, or did.

Yes, 301 has a felt liner. Longer than 12" , tho, so craft felt piece is a bit short.

My 348 also has a felt liner so I just assumed that all machines did.

I just became the (oh-so-happy) owner of a Featherweight - and mine does not have a felt liner in the drip pan/tray. Should I put one in there?

Congratulations on your new Featherweight. The drip pad will help keep the drip pan cleaner. You can buy a drip pad at https://singer-featherweight.com/search?q=drip+pad. As a new Featherweight owner, you might also be interested in the many tutorials and articles about these little cuties.
