I have already replied but agree with jeenb's comment about DH saying enough! He still keeps finding and buying me machines so even though he grumbles about space, I'm guessing I haven't reached max capacity. I have close to 40 machines by my reckoning because we have bought 4 over the last 2 weeks. I am going to rehome a couple of them once they're cleaned oiled and ready to go again.
Chris

needles3thread 06-25-2012 07:05 AM

I can understand collecting the small machines for display because they are so cute. I cannot understand collecting regular size sewing machines unless
the reason would be to clean/repair them for resale. I surely am in the minority with my thoughts.

chris_quilts 06-25-2012 08:47 AM

I do use most of mine that are cleaned and running but have been attempting to rehome some because I cannot sew on all of them at the same time and I have others that need work but no space available because others are in the way. I do use mine as decorative tables BUT no plants on any of them.
Chris

I had one of my friends ask me, "Why?" I told her "Because I LIKE them." She came back with, "I know, and they're neat looking, but WHY do you need more than one?"

They're all different. I don't have more than one of any model. I haven't yet run us out of house and home...they all work and I enjoy deciding which one to use for different projects.

Same here. I don't have a duplicate of anything, even as a backup or for parts. To the best of my knowledge every machine I have is in working order or only needs cleaning/oiling to run except I need to rewire the plug on my vintage White. Since acquiring my treadles, however, I think I'm more interested in those than the vintage ones from the 60s and 70s with a handful of exceptions.

Charlee, I have several duplicates but I'm like you. One of my duplicates is 2 FWs and I have 3 201's because DH likes the way they look. :D I enjoy seeing what they do and I do rehome them to people who need them or the local animal clinic auction to raise money for them.

I made the mistake of answering my mother yesterday when she asked how many machines I had now. I was sitting next to my husband and he said "7 or 8" at the same time I said "15" and I got a surprised look from him. But I counted them off and he knew about all of them. One is now gone, one is a parts machine, and 3 more likely to go by the time we move early next year. I think 10 is a good number.

One would have to understand and appreciate the beauty in design and wonderful mechanics of these machines to understand and appreciate the 'why'. And this is a fairly inexpensive item to collect. That doesn't even address the community of wonderful, giving people who also collect these vintage sewing machines and are willing to give their time, energy and help you take apart, fix, repair and/or how to use your machine. With all of these collectors, many vintage machines with tons of useful hours left in them, still will get trashed in the dump or used as boat anchors. Sew, many of us consider ourselves collector/rescuerers! :D
:D:D

Well, I have a threadle, 2 FW's, a Singer 503 Stant O Matic, an old Viking, Singer, Kenmore (the one I always use) and a serger (not all working). Now, I know that's not many compared to some, BUT....I think we might all need re-hab. LOL

xxxxxxxxxx 06-25-2012 11:37 PM

is there a sewing machine AA group ?? in reading the head count, I count what I have here shake my head, I'm not so sure I should be doing this,, when ask ... why ... I ask why do you have 4 cars. you can only one at a time..

I'm at a breaking point, Now the machines I buy are getting BIGGER !!

now when we die , how many of the in laws will be fighting over your sewing machines,,

Scakes 06-26-2012 01:02 AM

I had to count mine the other day. Seems to be a funny thing with my friends - "how many sewing machines do you have now?" they are always asking. I lost track for a while so I've been saying "oh, about 20 of them." I actually only have 18 though. Guess I better hurry up and get 2 more so my count is right. :)

Sorry, no manual for the Sewmor 770, I wish!. The wiring is bad so its just a real purdy dust/quilt holder in my sewing room. :). Just looking at my list above, i also have 3 featherweights and many singers not on that list..........

jennb 02-26-2013 05:04 PM

With my most recent acquisition I currently own about 120...though about 20 or so of them will be sold in the near future. I don't need 6 301s. :D

haha would you believe out of all these machines I have, I don't have a red eye OR a sphinx?!

What I do have, is about 7 301 machines, among lots of other random stuff. I'm going to see if I can sell them on Craigslist or Ebay...or barter them for other stuff.I have my eye on a commercial embroidery machine and I'm hoping I can sell enough to pay for most of that.

QuiltFaerie 02-27-2013 11:57 AM

Okay, I am going to play also. My sister asked me how many I have, hmmm, that would be 11?

1 Husqvarna Viking Emma (first machine, not computerized)
1 Husqvarna Viking Designer SE
3 Singer Featherweights (1950, 1953 and 1964)
1 Singer 301A Long Bed
1 Singer 15-90 (my grandmother's)
1 Good Housekeeper recent purchased at a Share House for $25
1 Husqvarna Serger
1 APQS Millennium Long Arm
1 Newly acquired Singer 66 Treadle Head (won on eBay Sunday night, YAY ME!!!!) Of course, I still need a cabinet for it.

Not sure how many more I will buy. I would kind of like one of those pretty Blue Morse sewing machines to add to my collection and maybe a Pink Atlas too. Oh and a candy apple red repainted Singer FW would be nice also. LOL

redmadder 03-01-2013 08:05 AM

Little brother and husband laughed at me for grumbling that someone here has 120 machines, I only have 16. No fair, one of them is a modern serger and 2 are from the 1970s. I get no respect!

DonnaMiller 03-01-2013 01:18 PM

Charlee,
So glad to see you back. We were worried and missed you a lot.

DonnaMiller 03-01-2013 01:21 PM

Guilty. I have two still in their bentwood cases that I haven't opened yet. One is a 66 Redeye, very old and another is what I think is a 99 from my Aunt. Lack of space is my main problem. When it gets warmer, I will take them out on the deck and beautify them. Can't wait. It is snowing today, and in middle Tennessee too. Some cherry trees are blooming and the daffodils are blooming. The maple trees are heavily budded. What happened to Spring?

Later this week I'll get the rest of the machines I'm planning to sell. There are a few 301s, an Elna Grasshopper, a couple of 15 clones, a vintage Necchi, a Kenmore, and probably 4 or 5 others I'm not recalling at the moment. I think there may be a rocketeer or two in there as well.

Sunflowerzz 10-17-2013 03:10 PM

I started purchasing vintage machines last month in Sept. I now have 15 and 7 or 8 cabinets. I have started going through each one cleaning them up and then evaluating them to see which three or more? I want to keep for my various craft projects. I know a lot more now thanks to the peeps here and I am zero-ing in on the style I like and what I want each machine to do. I knew nothing last month and now I know just enough to be dangerous. LOL I could see myself keeping 30 or so around in various stages of repair, it's fun and it feels really good when one is finished and sparkly clean and you are the one that DID ALL OF THAT:D

Jeanette Frantz 10-17-2013 03:26 PM

Charlee, you go girl! You and your husband are the ones buying and maintaining the sewing machines -- Just enjoy them -- that's no different than someone collecting stamps, coins, etc.!

Jeanette Frantz

heljoy50 10-17-2013 05:40 PM

I have 16 Vintage Singers and 1 New Century.

Also modern machines-

2 Husqvarna

1 Pfaff

1 Brother Innovis QC 1000 (my favourite modern)

1 Janome serger

1 imagine Wave serger (favourite)

1 Janome Cover Pro 1000CP

I am always told I have too many, especially the Vintage Singers "that belong in the rubbish dump" !! But Machine Collecting is no different to any other Collection hobby!

amyjo 10-17-2013 08:05 PM

If I could find a Bernina for that price I wouldn't even think twice about it following me home, it would be in my arms and carrying it out the door as fast as I could walk. I have lots of machines--hubby doesn't even know about some of them. lol he did buy a lot of the Singers that are out in the bus waiting to be worked on. I have rehomed 4 of those and also a 301 that I bought for a friend of mine in CO. I sent her a care pkg last week and another care pkg that she got today with the machine and some more fabric. I also have my SS pkg ready to be mailed I think tomorrow--so going to tease her, but also to make sure she gets it with time to spare.
I have 2 FW's, 2 301A's, 2 Singer Stylist 533's, 1 Brother industrial, 1 juki serger industrial, 1 singer serger, 1 babylock serger, 1 singer spartan, 1 15-91, 2 or 3 singers can't remember the #'s for, 1 Dressmaker, another German made machine I forgot the name for, and about 14 or 15 singers out in the bus that were from a school they got rid of, I have a Futura II, a Husqvarna Rose embroidery machine, my little 128 hand crank, my singer sphinx that I will turn into a handcrank, also last but not least the machine I got from Steve H for decoration. 21 that work and the rest need some work on them.
