Keep oil off plastic gears. Use only what your manufacturer recommends on those. Some plastics are actually damaged by oil or other petroleum based products.

A related question. Has anyone here used Lily White brand sewing machine oil? I see it sold on Amazon by the quart for pretty small money compared to the little bottles of Singer oil you can buy.
