Joe and Elaine - What great fun being able to do quilts together. I wish I had a co-pilot.
I thought you might like this picture. I swear by the quilt as you go method, because it means you can limit the bulk passing through the machine to the right of the needle. Also with a lamp the bulb is further up and out of harm's way. Trish - Love the Lilly quilt - what a lot of cross stitch! Purplefiend- gorgeous baby quilts. I especially love the second one, so colourful! |
Muv, and everyone thanks for the complements on the Lilly quilt. Muv, I need to learn the quilt as you go method.

MUV,
Thank you! I'm impressed that you are quilting with a hand crank machine. Wow!! Beautiful quilt indeed! Sharon |
purplefiend,
Using a HC machine is easier than you think. I didn't think I could do it, but I found it to be easy. Joe |
I can flat fell on my HC - it isn't as hard as you think
|
I have pieced quilt blocks with my Singer 99 & 201 hand cranks and it was easy. However quilting might be more difficult
for me. I prefer using a treadle, the 201 is being used as a treadle, one of my favorite machines. I've had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders, so too much cranking isn't good for me. Sharon |
Hello Purplefiend, I used two machines for that quilt. The free motion quilting was done on a 15K treadle, and the quilting around the edge of the appliqué was done with the 99K hand machine shown in the the picture. The picture shows the blocks being joined, doing the third of the three lines of stitching.
Trish - You might like this video by Leah Day. Watching this gave me the QAYG method I used, but I did a three eighths of an inch seam allowance rather than a quarter and had to cut the strips a bit wider. The red strips on the picture are block joins. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7_lwOfZWM8 PS Purplefiend - Exciting day today - I bought a 201K treadle!! |
Great quilts

Muv, thanks for the tip I watched Leah's video and she is very easy to follow. Will give it a try.

MUV,
Thanks for explaining that you did most of the quilting with your 15K treadle. You'll really love sewing with your 201K, when oiled properly its almost silent. I use it for making some of my quilts, the Pfaff 60 treadle sits right beside him. These 2 are my favorite treadles. |
