Good for you, I got a treadle New Home Rotary not long ago but no time so far to work on it. medical issues with hubby. Luckly mine doesn't need much but a cleaning and oiling and now have the oil and maybe soon will have time.

pdriggs 01-24-2013 10:40 AM

Your before and after looked a lot like mine except that mine is a Singer, and someone had taken off about half of the 'antiquing'. Don't you just love having it?

I still need a spring to keept the bobbin winder up off the wheel when it sews, but I can wedge something in there to get the job done now.

Wouldn't have known it was the same machine and cabinet.. It's beautiful now.

Thank you for all the kind comments. We bought Kit at an estate sale for $28 on November 1st last year. We started taking her apart the next day. We did it slowly and took a few pictures. I forgot to turn off the auto-focus on the camera so what I really wanted a picture of at times was in the blurry background. Live & learn. I received a lot of advice from Glenn & Steve & several others here on the Vintage threads. I hope I wasn't too much of a PIA. I did send the machine head off to someone else to refurbish the innards. I first started using Citistrip to remove the paint on the cabinet but it wasn't getting it all off. Someone suggested ZipStrip. That stuff is fabulous but definitely should be used outdoors or well-ventilated area. I was outside under a carport cover open on three sides. Must have the gloves that can withstand chemicals, too. A couple of toothbrush-like soft brass bristle brushes, a whole large roll of the blue paper shop towels, some throw-away bristle brushes, and of course a few choice words here & there. The weather turning cooler slowed me down and so did the holidays and a bout of cold/flu. If I hadn't been retired, this project would still be going on. My DH helped some but left the majority of it to me. Also, good thing I live in the south and the weather in November and December was relatively mild.

katykwilt 01-24-2013 01:53 PM

I just came from the kitchen -- when I saw the result, my thought was: "delicious". You did a great job!

tenngal 01-24-2013 02:38 PM

Fantastic. Mine has a little spot on the top of the lid where th veneer has lifted up a little and am not sure how to fix that.

Maura 01-24-2013 08:36 PM

I have a lovely Singer treadle that was never abused like that. You will love sewing on her. BTW I put an acrylic belt on mine.

costumegirl 01-24-2013 09:49 PM

She is beautiful!! You did a fantastic job!! It may have been a long and onerous task but now you have an exceptional machine to play with!!

oregongirl 01-24-2013 10:36 PM

you really did a fantastic job! it's just gorgeous. how did you get the apron piece that says "New Home" on it to put on the cabinet?

Minerva1 01-25-2013 05:37 AM

The apron piece was already there. It doesn't show up in the original pic because the machine is open.

Wow love the way they shine!!! I am especially interested to know what you did on the treadle to refinish it to that color and the how you got the black to shine like new. I inherited my great grandma's treadle as i have shared but afraid to let hubby do anything to the cabinet but it could sure use something to moisturize her she is a bit dry and pale and that is expected since she was made/sold in 1894 and still works but as i said she is a bit dried up and pale.

We'll put her new belt on her tomorrow afternoon. And only one wood screw left over in the bucket!

Oh man way to go that sure does look fantastic now.Give your self a great big hug.It is just awesome to see thing come to life again.

Minerva1 01-26-2013 11:16 AM

Meow, Meow - I don't know if what I did to the treadle base is recommended or not. We took it apart as much as we could. I took it outside and washed it with warm water and car wash detergent using a sponge and soft bristle brush. Rinsed it with a hose and then we dried it off. Left it to sit in the basement overnight. Next day I put painters tape around the area where the pitman attaches and also around the other joints (don't know what it's called). Sprayed it with two coats of flat black Rustoleum and one coat of glossy Professional Rustoleum. I did put two coats of the glossy on the pedal. The machine itself I followed Glenn's tutorial best I could. It's not perfect but I'm happy.

Grinster 01-26-2013 11:48 AM

WOW, Awesome job on the machine and cabinet!

oregongirl 01-27-2013 08:52 AM

i took my grandma's treadle cabinet to a pro antique refinisher's to be spruced up and they also stripped and painted the irons black, then did the Singer logo in gold. i think what you did was just right. it looks beautiful.

I found the perfect chair yesterday. It needs some refinishing but will have to wait until spring when the temps are more consistent. I'm hoping the chair is from the same time period or close to it.

Great restoration, unless I saw the photos I would have a difficult time believing its the same machine.
