On my main sewing machine which is an Elna 7300, the setting is 2.5 (2.5 centimeters) which I believe is 11 or 12 stiches an inch. Went and measured, it is 11 stitches. Hmmm, never measured before and I may program a stictch length of 12 inches for piecing. But I have never had a problem with the seams at the 2.5 setting. For paper piecing I set the stitch length at 1.8 which translates to 13-14 stictches an inch. Some people use a 1.5 setting which is 18 stitches an inch. Since I had never measured (boy those stitches are small!) before I am going to put the info on the dry erase board that came with my Elna and also put the info in my Quilting Notes binder.

you can use a magnetic seam guide with your machine too..

for stitch length you move the lever up or down and tighten the knob screw thingy

thanks for this info. I just got a featherweight 221 for Christmas and was wondering about the 1/4 in foot. where can you order one from? Thanks for the stitch length info. I have an ELNA SU thats over 30 years old and I cant get use to my little 221. It sure is pretty though

My LQS happend to have a 1/4 foot made for the featherweight so I picked that up today. I have also seen them on line as well.
