    Dan,

    As I understand it, true reverse is when you can sew backwards just like you can forwards. Some of our machines can do that. You can even adjust the stitch length in reverse.
    The back tack feature as on my old 66-18 will put the machine in reverse but only stitch small stitches to tack down the thread.

    That's my understanding of that.
