I don't know Miriam. This really should be a sticky, it's one of the most educational threads in the whole forum. The info isn't just for vintage machines, it's important stuff for All machines.
And in questioning the why not, why did they remove some of the stickys a while back? They were important to us too but I guess not important to them.

Miriam, it seems like I have been reading lately that one should adjust the needle tension only when the presser foot is down. I don't understand that. I think that making sure the thread goes through all the guides and is between the discs that adjusting the dial wouldn't make any difference whether or not the presser foot is down. I know that the presser foot being up when going through the discs imakes it easier to make sure the thread is between them.
I like Tammie's advice as to pulling up on both sides to make sure the thread is seated between the discs.
Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do.

You are correct. If pressure foot is up you can twiddle the tension knob all day long and all you will do is wack it out when you do put the foot down. The reason is that there is a spring in the tension activated by the pressure foot lever. I’m sure Tammi would have a better explanation. You need to take apart and reassemble a tension to fully understand why that works.

When one lifts the presser foot lever on a Singer, a cam on it pushes a rod under the facelplate to the tension control.
It releases the pressure on the discs. So, yep, adjusting with the foot up is an exercise in futility. I still prefer leaf tension systems from pre 1900s
