Default rust removal tip from Make Magezine

This looks like something i'd like to try! BTW Make is a great resource for DIY'ers of all types!

I don't know that it would be very effective if painted on rather than dipped, but if one could add something to give it some gooeyness it might work also.

Huh. I have some, they sell it in the canning supplies. I don't have a rusty machine though. Hummmm.

I read an old book of stain removal a while ago which suggested treating the area with lemon juice (citric acid) or vinegar (acetic acid) then leaving it to dry in the Sun. It worked but the really bad stains took a few treatments and the garment's surrounding pattern got bleached.

Citric acid isn't hard to locate. It's the stuff that makes sour candy sour, on top of being a preservative/anti-browning. Your natural food store, bulk food store or canning isle should carry it fairly reliably. Never thought about rust but I have some slide plates on my 128 that could be a good test.

With RetroBright - a plastic whitener, they use corn starch, xanthan gum or arrowroot powder to make it "gel" a little so it can be painted on. Perhaps something like that would work? I don't know the chemical excitement that might ensue with certain combos, but perhaps there's an inert thickener...

you just want to not make the PH less acid...which many thickeners do. But if it's powder one might make a paste by not using much water.

Okay I tried it & it works fairly well. Used it on the rusty bits from the Windsor B. However, I mixed it with vinegar. And just barely liquid.
