The cabinet, motor and light are not original to the machine, it used to be a treadle. It's a model 27, one of 50,000 commissioned 10-5-1905.

I was fixing to say I have that exact cabinet, and the machine that came in it was my Nanny's. And much newer, from the 1950's or 60's.

At any rate it's a pretty machine, and as Lynnie said, it needs some tlc. As I'm not nearly as well versed in vintage machines as the others on here are, I can't say if it's a good deal or not.
Every time I hear that or say it, I think of my hubby's grandpa. He used to say, "I reckon it's worth it if someone is willing to, or wants it bad enough, to pay x amount of $$ for it". Good ole Grandpa.

In addition to what Cari said, this would be a project machine as there are pieces missing (at least from the pictures). The pieces missing are the bobbin winder, shuttle and front slide. It has a "Singer" motor, so I'm thinking that possibly it might have a motor boss and if so would be easy to put on a hand crank. Sew-classic has the bobbins, slide plate and hand crank. Shuttle and bobbin winder would have to be gotten elsewhere. Because of the location of the mounting point of where the bobbin winder would go one would have to figure out how to get the bobbin winder to work with either motor belt or hand crank. The electrified 27 that I have has the bobbin winder mounted near the hand wheel and the treadle 27 that I have has the bobbin winder mounted lower on the pillar.

I'm sure that the machine could be made to sew again. There is a great deal of satisfaction, for me, to get these old sewing machines back into working condition.

I cannot add anything to the restoration question. However, my mother had a machine just like this and I sewed on it for my early years. It replaced her Wheeler and Wilson treadle (Oh, I wish I had that machine now!). I was always intrigued by the beauty of the face plate. Ours was in a portable box but could have been dropped into a cabinet. Singer cabinets were pretty standard in that era.

How are you doing sak658? I've heard nice things about model 27, from a friend who use it regularly and others. She describes it as very solid and sturdy, more so than my 201 (which I find very solid and dependable). It's in a treadle and she use it for FMQ and all sorts of things her computerized machine struggles with.

Your machine looks terribe though, I hope we get to see pics along the way. I suspect it will take a few turns with cleaning, oiling and polishing before it's up and running again.

I would not be willing to pay that for this machine - it's missing too many parts, and in very poor shape in general.

Now, if you love the cabinet, then $30 is not a bad deal - consider the machine to be free, and find something nice to put in it's place.

I decided more work than I can give it...so did not purchase it....I do hope it will go to someone who really cares for old machines...it was in a garage sale...hopefully someone will take it and make something beautiful out of it...
I knew it was not in the original condition....thanks for all your information and advice...will relay all of this to the owner...that way they can at least tell a buyer the information...I can always count of QB helping me...thanks again..
