I know that clockwise/counterclockwise is very important with rotary bobbins - and I would think it would be for long ones too, or it's not going to be entering the tension slot correctly.

I agree with this. Try it the other way to see if it rolls off smoother

Steve-here are several views of the shuttle..I have the manual but not much info on shuttle. I am going to wind another bobbin and try that. I wonder if the thread goes through the two holes in the shuttle?. I really appreciate all the suggestions.

Ok I think the issue is that the thread need to slide to the right over the arch and then into the little recess where the arrow points. You hay have to thread the thread through the hole there, or the machine may just pick it up from there and pull it through as you are making your first stitch.

NOTE: If you can, try to reduce the image size to the 640x480 or 800x600 size (the actual numbers will depend on the resolution of your camera, on mine if I set the long side to 640, the short side become like 348. The idea is to help the folks that are on dial-up or slower connections.

After many tries and following suggestions I was able to thread the shuttle. This time I took pictures! Thank you for all the help.

Often these older shuttles are quite worn and won't work well no matter what. One "work around" is to adjust the shuttle holder so the shuttle rides closer to the machine. This is actually a normal adjustment for VS machines, and each new Boye Shuttle came with a little paper explaining how to do this.

I'm not sure if the boat shuttle machines have this ability or not, but it might be something to consider if you don't get a nice stitch.

Makes me wonder if my older New Home was converted. I've encountered this a few times with older Eldredge machines - they are old enough to take the older long shuttle, but have the carrier to accept the newer short shuttle. Those to are the same except one is 1/4" longer. Makes since that people would update thier machine so they could use what was much easier to obtain.

I know SteveH successfully put a much newer Domestic shuttle carrier on an older machine so he could use the chainstitch adapter - however the actual shuttle for that machine had not changed.

The earlier vs machines that did not have an adjustable shuttle carrier the shuttle carrier tabs that held the shuttle are bent slightly to adjust the clearance of the shuttle up against the race
